About the Project

When Shane O’Toole went looking for a new headquarters for his advertising company, he knew he wanted to do something unique and eye-catching to fit the creative culture of his company.

He set his sights on a worn and beaten building built in 1973 in a historical section the Avenues in Salt Lake City. The space presented many challenges, including low ceilings and darkness that would have been prohibitive for creative work. Mark worked with the architect to add massive glass skylights to let in natural light, and they designed “clouds” that would house a new technology for HVAC systems that didn’t require the traditional fat duct work so that the ceilings could remain somewhat lofted, thus opening up the work spaces in a light and airy way.

This was the furthest from a “new paint and carpet” job! We added walls and took away walls, added bathrooms and a breakroom and a conference room. We created all new management offices around the outside of the space and new open-plan staff workspaces, added a new reception area, and designed several smaller meeting spaces. And we dropped the main entrance to a lower floor for a dramatic effect, building a new corporate entryway to the back parking lot.

During the project another unrelated and unforeseen incident occurred, and we ended up having to perform some emergency repairs to the two-level parking structure. And we did all of this while the other levels of the building contained occupants–no small feat!
